This would be microscopic gold, but still very cool to see Gold formed outside of earth inside of a meteorite! Aletai meteorites are one of the rarest, smallest subgroups of meteorites, being in the IIIE category. It is an iron meteorite, but it also contains Iridium and even trace amounts of gold! One of only SIXTEEN impacts that are in the IIIE category! Aletai Meteorites contain the highest percentage of gold within IIIE. It’s levels of Irridium are also extremely high compared to anything found on earth. In fact, it was this high Iridium level that helped us piece together the story of the dinosaurs – or shall I say the ending! This meteorite impact altered the earth’s surface around the entire world, giving us a distinguishable layer called the Cretaceous- Paleogene boundary.
